Channel lettering can be used in a number of different ways to advertise companies, brands and products. However, until recently channel lettering was always made using conventional techniques of bending wood, metal or plastic into the desired shape. The AM.CO.ZA PrintUP 3D printerfrom Advanced Machinery has a number of features which make it ideally suited to the channel lettering market. Firstly, there is the size of the flatbed of the printer which can easily handle letters up to 800 x 800mm with a maximum height of 85mm. This makes it suitable to produce even the largest sizes of letter which can be mounted on the outside of buildings. Secondly, there is the ability to mount and automatically change between two different colours of filament allowing for a continuous production process which results in a stronger finished product due to the fact that there is no need for bonding. Thirdly, is the capability of the printer to handle either Polylactic Acid (PLA) filament or Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG) filament offering users a range of features depending on the requirements and location of where the lettering will be mounted.
Both PLA and PETG offer very specific advantages and the ability to print either of these filaments on the PrintUP 3D printer means that users are not restricted to one filament. PLA is biodegradable in the right circumstances, requires no preheating of the printing table or bed, can be easily post-print processed and is paintable. PETG is stronger and more flexible than PLA but does require preheating of the printing table or bed. It is more resistant to heat, chemicals and water than PLA and is also more resistant to UV light. It is not paintable and is also not biodegradable.
The channel lettering can be 3D printed on the PrintUP 3D printer and then with the use of the AM.CO.ZA TruCUT laser cutter and engraver the base boards of the lettering can be precisely manufactured to fit into the underside of the letter for the creation of complete lettering which can be lit with LED lights for enhanced effect to suit almost any indoor or outdoor location.
