Learning by Doing: Nailing the No-White-Border Trick

Things are buzzing at AM.CO.ZA’s incubation program. The folks in it are getting their hands dirty with the machines, and they’re picking up tricks of the trade straight from our techs. It’s not just about learning the ropes—it’s about diving into the real stuff, solving actual problems.

Take Chris, for instance. He’s been soaking up knowledge in the program and now he’s at the point where he’s confidently sharing tips with customers. One issue he’s tackled recently is a common headache for our clients: those pesky white borders that sneak into printed designs and throw off the whole vibe.

The Problem and How to Fix It

If you’ve ever printed something and ended up with a thin white outline around your design, you know it’s a total eyesore. It screams “off-brand” and just looks sloppy. But Chris figured out a fix that’s honestly pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it:

Boom. That’s it. Your file’s ready to roll for printing.

Printing and Pressing

Since Chris was working with dark blue fabric, he used black powder (you’d go with white powder for lighter materials). He baked it a bit longer than usual to get it just right, then it was time for the heat press.

He set the press to 130°C for 30 seconds and laid a Teflon sheet over the fabric to keep it safe. After pressing and letting it cool for a sec, he peeled off the transfer, and voilà—no more white borders. Just a clean, crisp design.

The Payoff

The final print came out looking sharp, professional, polished, and exactly what the client wanted. It’s a great example of how a couple of small tweaks can make a huge difference.

That’s the heart of our incubation program: jumping in, tackling real-world challenges, and building the know-how to share with others. It’s learning by doing, and it’s pretty darn rewarding.
