A new challenge launching in South Africa is asking exactly that.

Called Grid Game, the initiative from AM.CO.ZA is built around a simple idea: give people a working machine, take away the manual, and see whether they can figure it out.

The first challenge centres on an A3 DTF printer. Teams receive a fully operational unit, test it, take it apart, and then attempt to put everything back together again. If they can get it running and produce a final showroom-quality print before the deadline, they keep the machine.

The printer at stake is valued at R32,642.

What makes the challenge unusual is that it isn't aimed solely at experienced technicians. According to the organisers, the focus is on learning, observation, and problem-solving rather than existing expertise.

Participants begin with a day of orientation covering software installation, machine setup, printing processes, and workflow basics. The machine itself only arrives later, when teams move into the practical stages of the challenge.

By the end of Day 3, every component must be separated into its smallest functional units. Over the next few days, teams work through the far less forgiving task of putting everything back where it belongs.

Loose connectors, alignment problems, missing labels, configuration issues and simple human mistakes can quickly turn a straightforward rebuild into a frustrating exercise. That is precisely the point.

The organisers describe Grid Game as an educational experience disguised as a competition. Winning teams walk away with a printer. Teams that don't make it to the finish line leave with something different: first-hand knowledge of how a DTF printer actually works.

That includes everything from machine structure and diagnostics to software setup, servicing procedures, printhead workflows and production processes.

The challenge takes place at am.co.za's Sunnyrock headquarters in Germiston, where teams work independently in designated areas during official game hours.
