How to replace K with fake K in CorelDRAW (from this page)

  1. This Printing Black Without the K part is about replacing K with a fake K in CorelDRAW after the image project is set up. The live block frames converting the image to CMYK so the black channel can be deleted and a fake dark rebuilt from a desaturated multiply layer.
  2. Use an image with nice contrast. The live block notes the previous still was a bit dark, so the fake-K result went muddy; a clearer black-to-white range works better.
  3. Channels on the current image are still RGB (red / green / blue plus the composite). With the image selected, go Image > Convert to CMYK 32 bit. The live block shows the channel list change from RGB to cyan / magenta / yellow / black.
  4. Select the Black channel and press Delete. Click the top CMY composite so all remaining channels show together. The live block then uses Object Manager: currently one layer; duplicate it (Ctrl+D or right-click Duplicate).
  5. With the top duplicate selected, open Adjust > Hue/Saturation/Lightness (shortcut Ctrl+Shift+U). Leave Master selected and drag Saturation all the way left so there is no colour. The live block prefers this over Desaturate, because Desaturate brought K back into the image.
  6. Still on that layer: Adjust > Tone Curve. Raise contrast between white and black until the fake dark reads clearly (the live block says play around until it works). Then set the layer mode to Multiply. Duplicate that multiply layer once more for extra clarity.
  7. The colour picker on dark areas now shows K = 0 while the image still looks dark.
